Martha Johnson. “Mark and I saw John perform at the Confidence Emperors launch for The International Sound System Party, Volume 1 compilation album at The Drake Underground in June 2019. His dynamic stage presence made an impression on us and we thought he was an interesting guy that we could work with someday.”

Mark Gane: “Several months later we were pitching a track for a car commercial which called for a dance/club feel. Martha made some beats with a hip hop feel and I added some rhythm guitar, but we needed a rap element and John immediately came to mind.”

Martha Johnson: “On a snowy February evening, the three of us were working together at our home studio. As the commercial brief was for a car ad, John arrived with a driving theme idea that had an autobiographical feel and immediately laid down two great takes. We used the first take, it was so spontaneous and joyful - it was winter outside, but John made it summer inside.”

Mark Gane: “From there, it all fell together. John gave it the lyrical character the music needed to complete itself. We didn’t get the car ad, but we ended up with a great song; a hybrid that incorporates all of our influences. Something none of us would have written on our own. A pan-cultural summer driving song!”
